Is there any connection between Homer Simpson's D'oh! and Welsh Duw ? Of course. After all, he is a Welsh character: Simpson is merely a clumsy anglicisation of Welsh 'simsan' unsteady, tottering and 'Homer' is from Welsh 'hiwmor' humour . I would not be in the least surprised if one day the location of Spring- field is finally revealed to be in the Welsh country of Eastern Pennsyl- vania.

But, Alwyn, that's clearly a loan from French 'homard' (as in 'un homard de mensonge' = a whale of a lie ). Please, don't let your eagerness to explain cause you be carried off by fantasy. This is a real living lan- guage we're talking about after all, not some construct of Tolkien's.

But, Alwyn, that's clearly a loan from French 'homard' (as in 'un homard de mensonge' = a whale of a lie ). Please, don't let your eagerness to explain cause you be carried off by fantasy. In your eagerness to associate the Simpsons with eastern Pennsylvania (whoever heard of such a thing?) or even France (what will you think of next?) you failed to give proper consideration to the undeniable fact that the mainland equivalent of the insular _expression_ is *andros o gelwydd*, thus overlooking the clear Classical origins of these mythological creatures.
