bone grafting for dental implants Block bone graft vs Demineralized bone
Hi, Six years after losing my 3 front lower teeth in an accident, I'm considering doing dental implants.  Due to the considerable bone loss and resorption that has taken place (estimated loss of height of 4-5mm), the two specialists I've talked to both recommend bone grafts, but they recommend it be done in different ways.  I'm more worried about the bone graft than about the implant procedure itself, so I'm hoping the expertise of this group can help me out and sort out which option might be better for me. The oral surgeon that I visited (Diplomate, ABOMS) recommended that I do a block bone graft, with the bone coming from my jaw near the wisdom tooth site. The periodontist that I visited (claims to have done 18 yrs of implants), however called block grafts an old technique and said that demineralized bone from human cadavers could be used as a grafting material instead.  He said this was a newer technique and resulted in more bone growth or less resorption in the end.  Does this make sense?   I have seen some posts here which seem to indicate using demineralized bone might be getting out of favor? What is the risk of grafting natural (my own) bone in a large block? WIll the grafted area grow back? Finally, would an oral surgeon be the better person to do a big graft operation? Thanks for any help! Evan Chan This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
