Here's a very inexpensive trick I sometimes use to vacuum seal Ziploc bags (YMMV!)  Instead of an electric- or battery-powered gizmo, I use a drinking straw - usually the sort that bends, but that's beside the point.  Any drinking straw will work.  After pushing most of the air from the plastic storage bag, I'll insert one end of the straw to the side/end of the ziploc bag so it's just below the 'zip locks' and close/seal the bag all the way to the inserted straw.  Then, I'll suck as much leftover air from the ziploc bag through the straw (please, no vulgar, obscene & otherwise unfriendly comments!!!).  While maintaining that 'vacuum', I'll withdraw the straw and quickly close that little bit of the 'zip' lock for a full seal.  I hope this makes sense? Sky Yeah, that's what I do. And after reading the different reviews I think I might stick to it. Scotty Just check the sucked-out bags in the freezer now and then - most of the regular bags won't hold the vacuum for very long. N. In your experience, do the ziplock vacuum bags? I only ask because I have seen mixed reviews in my research. Really about 50/50 for the reports of success and failure. Scotty

Sky I've done that, too. I saw Martha do it years ago. Dang, I didn't know that.  Doesn't surprise me, though.  Martha always says, ... and that's a good thing too, eh??? Sky, who couldn't resist ;D I've done that for years, even before ziplocs when they just had the press together seals.  Don't know where I picked up, but it was pre-Martha. It's a good alternative to vacuum sealers, but the plastic used in vacuum sealer bags is far more impermiable than ordinary zip-loc bags.  Still, it works for me.  I doubt I'd every buy a machine.                     Wayne Boatwright I'm pretty sure the plastic in the ziploc with the double zipper isn't permeable. It holds water, even upside down. If you blow it up it doesn't collapse. Kent

I have some pulled pork in there that was sealed up in June and it's still as air-free as the day I sealed it.
